Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

What To Expect From Your Pelvic Health Consultation

A full Women’s Health Assessment will take 60 minutes in our private and comfortable clinic environment. It will involve talking through your symptoms and medical history, where we will discuss your bladder, bowel and sexual health in a confidential and sensitive way, in order to determine where to go in terms of physical examination.

The physical examination can involve a musculoskeletal screen where your posture and lumbo-pelvic movement will be assessed. We like to look at and see how your body is working as a whole – not just independent parts!

It may be appropriate to perform an external and/or internal vaginal examination. This is the gold standard, helping us to form a comprehensive overview of how your pelvic floor is functioning, and whether there are any signs of prolapse which may be impacting on your symptoms. Internal assessments are entirely optional and can be done either during this first session (time allowing) or subsequent sessions. You are more than welcome to bring a chaperone if you wish. We will discuss this with you fully if we feel this is required and we are always more than happy to answer any questions in advance and during the examination. You may also be asked to complete a bladder diary in order to assess your bladder function in more depth if this is indicated from our discussions.

We encourage you to be fully part of this process and ask any questions or concerns you may have throughout – this is about you, your needs and what will work best for you to get you on the road to recovery.

After your Physiotherapy appointment you will receive an email with all the exercises and advice we have gone through, so that you have a detailed plan to follow at home. We are always accessible via email or text, to help you get the most from your rehabilitation programme.
